What to Wear to Your College Graduation

Graduation day usually means a gown on top and a suit underneath for photos before and after the ceremony, plus whatever family lunch or celebration follows. The suit needs to work under a hot gown for a few hours and still look sharp once the cap comes off.

Keep It Comfortable Under the Gown

Graduation gowns trap heat, especially outdoors in late spring. A lighter weight wool or a wool blend breathes better than heavier winter fabrics. Since most of the suit will be hidden during the ceremony itself, comfort matters more than making a bold style statement while you are actually wearing the gown.

What Actually Shows

Your shirt collar, tie, and a bit of the jacket will show at the neckline depending on the gown style, and your full suit will be visible before and after. Choose a shirt and tie combination you are happy to see in photos, since that is often the part people notice most in graduation pictures.

Color Choices

Navy and charcoal are versatile and work well across a range of family photos and settings. If your school colors matter to you, a tie or pocket square in that color is an easy way to nod to your university without committing your whole suit to it.

One Suit, Many Uses

Graduation is also a good moment to invest in a suit that will carry into job interviews and your early career, rather than something you will only wear once. A classic navy or charcoal suit checks that box.
