Spring Suiting: Fabrics and Colors for In-Between Weather
Spring sits in an awkward middle ground for suiting. It is too warm for heavy winter wool but often still too cool and unpredictable for true summer fabrics. Getting spring right means choosing pieces that flex with the weather rather than committing hard to one extreme.
Fabric Weight
A mid weight wool, somewhere around 9 to 11 ounces, is the most practical choice for spring. It has enough structure for cooler mornings and evenings but will not leave you overheated once the afternoon warms up. Save the heaviest winter cloths and the lightest summer linens for their respective seasons.
Color and Pattern
Spring is a good time to move away from heavy winter darks. Mid grey, soft navy, and light tan all read as seasonally appropriate without being flashy. Subtle patterns like a light check or fine stripe also feel more at home in spring than in the depths of winter.
Layering for Unpredictable Weather
Spring weather can swing widely in a single day. A suit that works well with and without an overcoat gives you flexibility. Choose an overcoat in a lighter fabric than your winter coat, something you can carry over an arm if the day warms up.
Spring Occasions
Spring is wedding season for a lot of people, along with graduations and the start of interview season for new graduates. A versatile mid grey or soft navy suit covers most of these occasions without needing a separate suit for each one.
