Shoes to Match Your Suit: A Pairing Guide

Shoes are one of the first things people notice, whether consciously or not, and mismatched shoes can undercut an otherwise well fitted suit. The good news is that a small, well chosen shoe collection can cover almost every suit color and occasion.

Black Shoes

Black leather oxfords or derbies are the most formal option and the safest choice for black, charcoal, and navy suits, especially for business settings, funerals, and formal evening events. If you only own one pair of dress shoes, make it black.

Brown Shoes

Brown shoes, from a rich chestnut to a lighter tan, pair naturally with navy, grey, and tan suits and read as slightly less formal than black. Brown works especially well for daytime weddings, business casual settings, and sport coat pairings.

Matching Shoe Tone to Suit Tone

As a loose guideline, darker suits pair well with darker shoes and lighter suits pair well with lighter shoes, though this is a preference rather than a strict rule. What matters more is that your belt matches your shoe color, since a mismatch there is more noticeable than a shoe and suit combination that is slightly off.

Formality Levels

Oxfords, with their closed lacing, are the most formal shoe style. Derbies, with open lacing, are slightly more casual and versatile. Loafers work well for business casual and warm weather events but generally read as too casual for black tie or formal business settings.
