The Perfect Tie: A Guide to Knots, Widths, and Patterns

A tie is a small piece of fabric that carries a lot of the outfit. The wrong width, knot, or pattern can throw off an otherwise sharp suit, while the right choice pulls the whole look together. Here is how to think through each part of the decision.

Width Should Match Your Lapel

As a general rule, tie width should roughly match your jacket's lapel width. A slim lapel paired with a wide tie looks unbalanced, and the reverse is also true. Most modern suits use a lapel in the 2.5 to 3.5 inch range, which pairs well with a tie of similar width.

Choosing a Knot

The four in hand knot is smaller and slightly asymmetric, and works well with most collar types and tie fabrics. The half Windsor is a bit fuller and more symmetric, suited to spread collars and more formal occasions. The full Windsor is the largest and most formal, best saved for wide spread collars and black tie adjacent events. When in doubt, the four in hand is the most versatile everyday choice.

Solid, Striped, or Patterned

A solid tie is the safest choice and pairs with almost any shirt. Stripes add energy without much risk. Small repeating patterns, like dots or a subtle geometric print, add personality but should be paired with a simpler shirt so the outfit does not compete with itself. Save bold, large scale patterns for occasions where you want the tie to be the focal point.

Matching Tie to Suit Color

Navy and burgundy ties are the most versatile, working with nearly every suit color. A patterned tie that pulls one color from a checked or striped suit is an easy way to tie the whole outfit together intentionally.
