How to Care for Your Suit So It Lasts for Years

A good suit is an investment, and a little care makes it last for years instead of seasons. None of this takes much effort. Build a few simple habits and your suit will keep looking sharp.

Hang It the Right Way

Always use a wide, curved wooden hanger that supports the shoulders, and hang trousers by the cuffs or folded over a bar. Good hanging keeps the shoulders from deforming and lets wrinkles fall out naturally between wears.

Brush and Steam, Do Not Over Clean

Give your suit a gentle brush with a clothes brush after wearing it to lift dust and keep the fabric fresh. Use a steamer to release wrinkles rather than a hot iron, which can flatten and shine the cloth. Steam refreshes a suit without the wear of cleaning.

Let It Rest Between Wears

Do not wear the same suit two days in a row. Fabric needs a day or two to recover its shape and let moisture evaporate. Rotating between suits is one of the simplest ways to make each one last much longer.

Clean Sparingly

Dry clean only when you truly need to, since the process is hard on fabric over time. For most wearers, a few times a year is plenty. Spot clean small marks quickly and let brushing and steaming handle the rest.

Store It Properly

For long term storage, use a breathable garment bag rather than plastic, and keep suits somewhere cool and dry. In warmer months, cedar blocks help protect wool from moths without any chemical smell.

Take care of a well made suit and it will take care of you. Find yours in the Zane made to order collection.
