Half Canvas vs Full Canvas: What Suit Construction Really Means

Two suits can look identical on the hanger and feel completely different once you put them on. The reason is usually hidden inside the jacket: the canvas. Understanding construction helps you know what you are paying for and why some jackets drape so much better than others.

What Is the Canvas?

The canvas is an inner layer between the outer fabric and the lining of a jacket. It gives the chest and lapels their shape and structure. There are three main approaches, fused, half canvas, and full canvas, and the difference comes down to how that inner layer is built and attached.

Fused Construction

In a fused jacket, the inner layer is glued to the outer fabric. It is the most affordable method and keeps costs down, but it can look a little flat, and over years of wear and cleaning the glue can sometimes bubble. It is common at lower price points.

Half Canvas

A half canvas jacket uses a floating canvas layer through the chest and lapels, stitched rather than glued, with the lower half fused. This is the sweet spot for most people. The chest and lapels drape naturally and develop a clean roll over time, while the price stays reasonable.

Full Canvas

In a full canvas jacket, the floating canvas runs the entire length of the front. It offers the best drape, moves with your body, and molds to you over time. It is the traditional mark of a fine jacket and the most labor intensive to make.

Why It Matters and How to Tell

Construction affects how a jacket drapes, breathes, and ages. To get a feel for it, gently pinch the fabric near the bottom button. If you can feel a separate floating layer between the outer cloth and the lining, there is canvas there. If the layers feel glued as one, it is likely fused. For most people, a half canvas jacket delivers the best balance of quality and value.
